A Prayer for the Loss of a Loved One

When someone you love has died, the world can feel quietly different. Their absence may be felt in familiar places, treasured memories, ordinary moments, or in ways that are difficult to name. Love remains, even as life has changed.

If you have come here carrying the loss of a loved one, you are gently welcome here. Whether your grief is fresh or has been part of your life for some time, you are welcome to bring your heart just as it is.

Sometimes grief may leave us without words, even when we long to pray. If that is where you find yourself today, perhaps you might simply borrow these words.

You don't need to pray these words perfectly. They are simply offered as a quiet place to begin.

May this prayer for the loss of a loved one offer a quiet place to rest for a few moments in God's loving care.

A Promise from Scripture

"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."

— Psalm 34:18 (NIV)

A Quiet Prayer

Heavenly Father,

I miss someone I love.

Some days the ache feels so close, and I don't really know what to do with all that I am feeling. You already know every part of my heart. Thank You that I can come to You just as I am.

Thank You for loving the person I miss, and thank You for the love we shared.

Sometimes I wish I could have one more conversation with them. One more hug. One more ordinary day together. You understand those longings, Lord.

Please stay close to me when the missing feels especially heavy. When memories come unexpectedly, when tears appear without warning, and when the silence feels louder than I know how to bear, please remind me that You are here with me.

Thank You that I don't have to hide my sadness or pretend that I am stronger than I feel. I can bring all of my heart to You, and You hold me with such gentleness.

I don't know what tomorrow will feel like, but You do. Thank You that I don't have to carry today by myself.

Please help me to take one gentle step at a time. When I feel tired, remind me that I can rest in Your care.

And if all I can manage today is to whisper Your name, thank You for hearing my heart.

I don't understand this loss, but I know You are here with me.

Thank You that it is all right to miss someone I love.

Thank You for staying close.

Amen.

You might return to this prayer whenever your heart feels especially tender. Some days these words may feel especially close to your heart; other days you may simply sit quietly with a line or two that brings comfort.

A Prayer to Carry with You

Father,

Today my heart feels heavy.

Please stay close to me and hold me in Your loving care.

Thank You for loving me and for walking with me through this day.

Amen.

You are always welcome to return to this page. The words may feel different from one day to the next, and that's all right.

May you go gently, knowing that the Lord is near, and that you do not walk this path alone.
