When someone you care about is grieving, it can be difficult to know what to say or how to help. You may wish you could ease even a little of their sorrow, or simply let them know they are deeply loved.
Sometimes, when words feel small, prayer can become a quiet way of placing someone you love into God's gentle care.
If that's where you find yourself today, perhaps this prayer can help carry some of the words your own heart longs to say.

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God."
— 2
Corinthians 1:3–4 (NIV)
Heavenly Father,
Someone I love is hurting,
and I wish I could ease some of their sorrow.
I know I cannot take away their grief.
I cannot fill the empty place left by the person they love.
But You can be with them in all that they are carrying.
Please stay especially close to them today.
When the sadness feels heavy,
hold them gently.
When they are tired,
give them rest.
When the days feel lonely or especially quiet,
remind them that You are near.
And when there are no words for what they are feeling,
meet them there, too.
Please give me gentleness as I walk beside them.
Help me to listen when they want to talk,
to sit quietly when words are not what they need,
and to remember them in the days and weeks ahead.
I may not always know what to say or what to do.
Thank You that I do not have to have all the answers.
I can simply bring someone I love to You
and trust them to Your care.
Thank You for being the God of all comfort.
Thank You for loving my friend so deeply.
And thank You that I can come to You,
just as I am,
with this person I love on my heart.
Amen.
You might return to this prayer whenever your friend is especially on your heart. Some days you may pray these words just as they are; other days, you may simply hold a line or two quietly before God.
Father,
Please stay close to my friend in their grief.
Hold them gently when the sorrow feels heavy,
and remind them that You are near.
Help me to walk beside them with love,
and guide me when I don't know what to say.
I place them gently in Your care.
Amen.
Perhaps these prayers can be a quiet place to come when your friend is on your heart.
May God be near to your friend in their grief, surrounding them with His comfort and care.
And may He gently guide you, too, as you walk beside someone you love.

If this has been enough for today, that's perfectly all right. You can simply let these words rest with you for now.
